That same year she won first place in the regional finals in the Kennedy Center. In 1986 she was the only American to win a medal in the Swiss Ballet competition Prix de Lausanne and became a member of the corps de ballet of the American Ballet Theatre.In 1987 Miss Kent starred in the Herbert Ross' film, “Dancers.”
She was promoted to ABT soloist in 1990 and in 1993 to principal dancer.
In 1993 she won the Erik-Bruhn Award in Toronto. Julie Kent danced leading roles in many ballets, including “Apollo“, “La Bayadere“, “Cinderella“, “Le Corsaire“, “Don Quixote“, “Giselle“, “Manon”, Merry Widow”, Othello”, Romeo and Juliet”, Sleeping Beauty”, La Sylphide” and Swan Lake”.
