Congratulations to Lar Lubovitch!
Boston Conservatory at Berklee presented an honorary doctorate to Lar Lubovitch during the Conservatory’s commencement ceremony on May 11. Lubovitch will be recognized for his achievements and influences on stage, screen, and television. Over the years, Lubovitch has been lauded for his many accomplishments. In recent years, recognition has included naming as a Ford Fellow by United States Artists; receiving the Dance/USA Honors; receiving the Prix Benois de la Danse for Choreography at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (for his dance, Crisis Variations); being presented with the American Dance Guild Lifetime Achievement Award; being awarded an honorary doctorate by the Juilliard School; appointment as a distinguished professor of dance at the University of California, Irvine; naming as “one of America's irreplaceable dance treasures” by the Dance Heritage Coalition; and receiving the ADF Scripps Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Dance Magazine Award, and the Martha Graham Award. By tradition, the Prix Benois de la Danse jury met with representatives of the press in the Metropol Hotel on June 19th. Programme and Chairman of the Jury of the Prize is international ballet star — Svetlana Zakharova. The President is distinguished choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian federation.
“For ballet dancers, the Benois Prize is not only a professional assessment of their work, but also an important step in their career. So, of course, today is a very exciting day for all members of the jury including myself, and I think we're in for a heated debate. The names of the new laureates will be solemnly announced during the Benois 2023 Prize Ceremony at the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre tomorrow,” Svetlana Zakharova told reporters.

On June 20-21st the Historic Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre will host the World Ballet Festival Benois de la Danse. Artistic Director of the Benois de la Danse Programme and Chairman of the Jury of the Prize is international ballet star — Svetlana Zakharova. The President is distinguished choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian federation.
During the press conference held on May 18th at the Bolshoi Theatre, the event’s organizers spoke in detail about the gala concerts’ program, as well as revealed some information about the upcoming award ceremony. For example, the 2023 Benois Lifetime Achievement Award will go to People’s Artist of the USSR, laureate of the State Prize, choreographer, and teacher Mikhail Lavrovskiy.

On the first day, the audience will get to see several Russian and Moscow premiers: soloists from the National Ballet of China will present a piece from the ballet Where to Pour All My Love?, chroreographed by one of this year’s nominees Li Jun, soloist of the Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abay Malika Yelchibaeva in a duet with Azamat Askarov will perform a piece from Frescoes (choreographed by Zaurbek Raibayev) as Queen Shamkhat — her nomination, and the prima ballerina of the Seoul Universal Ballet Misun Kang with a partner will present Mirinaegil from the ballet Korea emotion, choreographed by Bingxian Liu.
Artists of the Bolshoi Theater will show this season’s sensational work by Vyacheslav Samodurov to the music of Y. Krasavin Dancemania. On the second evening, stars of the world’s leading ballet companies will take the stage. Svetlana Zakharova, Artemy Belyakov, Ekaterina Krysanova, Vladislav Lantratov, Ivan Vasiliev, Denis Rodkin, Eleonora Sevenard, Maria Vinogradova, Elizaveta Kokoreva, Semyon Chudin, Denis Savin, Ana Turuzashvili, Evgenia Obraztsova and Alexey Putintsev will represent the Bolshoi Theatre. Hanna O Neill became the first ballerina from Japan
Hanna O'Neill became the first ballerina from Japan to be awarded the status of “etoile” of the Paris Opera Ballet. O'Neill was born in Tokyo. Her mother is Japanese and her father is from New Zealand. She won the Prix de Lausanne in 2009 and the Benois de la Danse laureate in Moscow in 2016. Congratulations!

Carlos Acosta, Cuban dancer, choreographer and artistic director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Benois de la Danse laureate received the Prix de Lausanne “For a Life in Art”. This year the competition celebrated its 50th anniversary. Jean-Christophe Maillot (Benois laureate) became the chairman of the 2023 anniversary jury, and the Russian ballerina Diana Vishneva was among the jury members.

Anniversary gala concert «Benois de la Danse-30 years» was held at the Bolshoi Theatre
A gala concert with the participation of ballet stars in honor of the 30th anniversary of the international ballet prize “Benois de la Danse” took place on Tuesday on the Historical stage of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. The auditorium was sold out.
The evening began with a demonstration of a video about the history of Benois de la Danse. The audience applauded the appearance on the screen of Galina Ulanova, Marina Semenova, Yvette Chauvire, Maurice Bejart and other artists of Russian and world ballet. Dance episodes with their participation were replaced by documentary filming of the award ceremonies of previous years.
The gala concert was attended by artists of the Bolshoi, Mariinsky, Mikhailovsky Theaters, the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre and the Yekaterinburg Ural Opera Ballet Theatre, students of the Moscow State Academy of Choreography were also involved. The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra was conducted by Anton Grishanin.

The world premiere of one-act ballets “Neighbors” and «1418» to music by Dmitry Shostakovich took place at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater. The performances were planned to be staged for the anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, but the premiere was postponed due to the pandemic.
Both ballets were created by the chief permanent choreographer, laureate of Benoit de la Danse Ivan Vasiliev. The plot is based on the events of the Great Patriotic War, which revive in the memory of its participants. The number 1418 symbolizes the number of those terrible days. The laureates of the Prize Benois-Massine have been announced in Positano
The laureates of the Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine have been announced in Positano. This year, the ceremony was held online. The laureate of the Benois-Massine Prize became the English dancer and choreographer sir Anthony Dowell. Congratulations!
Anthony Dowell was Director of the Royal Ballet London from 1986-2000, and in 2020 he was awarded the Benois de a Danse Prize in the category “Lifetime Achievement”.
Prize Benois-Massine has been founded in 2015 and awarded by the organizers' committees of Premia Positano and Benois de la Danse. Among the laureates of Benois-Massine have been Ana Laguna, Alicia Amatriain, Mariko Kida, Eduard Watson, Ekaterina Krysanova, Maria Kochetkova and Vladislav Lantratov.

The Hamburg Ballet opened its 2020-2021 season with the premiere
On September 6, the Hamburg Ballet, one of the first in Europe, opened its 2020-2021 season with the premiere of John Neumeier's ballet Ghost Light. The name is taken from the jargon of Broadway theaters — Ghost Light — this is the name of the only lamp that remains on stage overnight after performance. An exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Benois
In the House of Russian Diaspora named after Solzhenitsyn in Moscow opened an exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Benois. The exposition covers all aspects of Benois's work — a painter, art theorist, book illustrator and theater decorator. Our prize, the Benois de la Danse Prize, which was immediately compared with the “Ballet Oscar”, meaning the highest professional recognition was named after Alexander Benois, an outstanding persona of the world theatre.
The sculpture of the prize was created by Igor Ustinov, a descendant of Alexander Benois. In 2017, Igor Ustinov attended the 25th anniversary ceremony of the Benois de la Danse Prize.

Manuel Legris has been appointed Artistic Director of La Scala Ballet
Manuel Legris, etoile of Paris Opera Ballet, Benois de la Danse member of the Jury and laureate, successful manager and choreographer, has been appointed Artistic Director of La Scala Ballet. He will take his new position next December, at the beginning of the new season.

Alexei Ratmansky (Benois laureate) will present a new version of ballet Giselle at the Bolshoi theatre on November 21-24. World première
The full evening ballet Body and Soul to the music of Owen Belton.received it’s World première on October 25 at Palais Garnier. It is a new work for the Paris Opera Ballet by a Canadien choreographer Benois laureate Crystal Pite.
Ms. Pite announced before the premiere that she’s going to take a year long break from her job to think about some new projects.

Dracula. The Beginning is a mixture of different genres — classical ballet and musical, theatre and cinema.
The Russian premiere of Don Quixote in Rudolf Nureyev
The Russian premiere of Don Quixote in Rudolf Nureyev's (member of the first Benois de la Danse Jury) version will be presented on October 25 at the Stanislavsky Musical Theatre in Moscow. This version has been staged by Laurent Hilaire, ex-etoile of Paris Opera, who was given this title by Nureyev and who's now the Artistic Director of Stanislavsky Ballet.
The world premiere of Don Quixote took place on December 14, 1869 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
The premiere of Alexandre Gorsky's version was shown on December 6, 1900 also at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
The premiere of Rudolf Nureyev's version was presented on December 1, 1966 at the Vienna Opera House.

On October 4 at the Mikhailovsky Theatre of St. Petersburg will be presented the premiere of a new version of La Bayadere by Benois laureate Nacho Duato. It is the Spanish choreographer's first work after his returning to Mikhailovsky Ballet as its Artistic Director in 2019.

The premiere of one more version of Sergey Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet took place at the antic amphitheater Arena di Verona. The choreographer of the new reduction is Benois nominee Johan Kobborg. The title roles were danced by Sergey Polunin and Benois laureate Alina Cojocaru.

Prima-ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet Evgenia Obraztsova (Benois nominee) was starring in Andrey Smirnov's film Frenchman. A French student Pierre Durant comes to Moscow in 1957 for a practical training at Moscow University and meets a Bolshoi dancer Kira Galkina… The film is coming to the theatres on October 31.
Rudolf Nureyev's International Classical Ballet Festival will be open
On September 7 Rudolf Nureyev's International Classical Ballet Festival will be open in Oufa, the city where Nureyev (member of the first Benois de la Danse Jury) was born. In the program there are two ballets by Yuri Grigorovich Swan Lake and The Legend of Love. Also in the frame of the Festival will be shown three galas with the participation of Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters' stars; Gala-Tchaikovsky, Gala-Nureyev and Gala-Grigorovich. Ivan Vassiliev, the principal of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and Benois laureate, will take part in the program of Gala-Nureyev. All the Festival's events will be held on the stage of the Bashkortostan Opera and Ballet Theatre.

On July 29 by Yuri Grigorovich's Spartacus the Bolshoi Ballet opened its season in London on the stage of Covent Garden. In addition to Spartacus, the program announced Swan Lake, Don Quixote and The Bright Stream. Among the leading soloists are Benois laureates: Svetlana Zakharova, Olga Smirnova, Denis Rodkin and Semyon Chudin. The season will continue to August 17.
The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will open its season on the Historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre
On July 29 the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will open its season on the Historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The Novosibirsk's company under the reins of Denis Matvienko (Benois nominee) will present two ballets by Piotr Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake in Asaf Messerer version and The Sleeping Beauty in the version by Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and Benois laureate Nacho Duato. Another Benois laureate Ivan Vassiliev will dance the role of Evil Genius in Swan Lake on August 6, 7 and 8. The season will last until August 10.

On June 24 in Vladivostok took place the opening night of the Fourth Far Eastern Festival Mariinsky with ballet by the house choreographer and Benois nominee Yuri Smekalov The Bronze Horseman. The role of the Tsarine of the Ball was danced by the Mariinsky Ballet prima-ballerina and Benois laureate Ekaterina Kondaurova.
The Bronze Horseman was created in 1949 by Rostislav Zakharov. The new choreographic version that was premiered in spring of 2016 has been made by Yuri Smekalov with the help of some retired dancers who used to dance in the original production.
Also in the frame of Festival will be shown, for the first time in Vladivostok, Sylvia by Leo Delibes and Frederick Ashton. The leading roles will be danced by the premiers of Mariinsky Ballet and Benois nominees Viktoria Tereshkina and Timur Ashkerov as well as by Benois laureate Kim Kimin and Nadejda Batoeva. There will be also in the Festival's program that runs until August 9 recitals of Kim Kimin and Vladimir Shkliarov.
The original version of Giselle
The original version of Giselle in choreography by a renown dance-maker Akram Khan (Benois nominee) was shown on the new stage of the Bolshoi theatre in the frame of the Chekhov Festival by the English National Ballet.
Leading roles were danced by Benois laureates Alina Cojocaru, Isaak Hernandes and Tamara Rojo (Artistic Director of the company who's idea was to commision this version to Akram Khan). The company principal James Stritter was Tamara Rojo's partner.
Akram Khan has been nominated to Benois de la Danse for Giselle in 2017.

Globally renowned choreographer, Benois de la Danse lauréate Mats Ek who announced a few years ago that he was going to completely retire from making choreographies and even staging his old works, presented on the stage of Palais Garnier the full evening of his creations Mats Ek. The new works include a duo Another Place to the music by Franz List and the famous Bolero by Maurice Ravel.
The Programme of the evening started with Carmen, ballet that choreographer created for his wife and muse Ana Laguna (Benois-Massine Prize laureate) 27 years ego.
THE 27th INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL BENOIS DE LA DANSE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
On May 21, the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage saw the announcement of the 27th Benois de la Dansewinners
This year 6 choreographic works were nominated for the Prize and on the evening of May 21 the jury announced that the award for “Best Choreography” goes to Fredrik Benke Rydman (Duet with an Industrial Robot, Stockholm City Theatre) and Christian Spuck (Winterreise, Zurich Ballet)
Soloists of 11 leading dance troupes from around the world competed for the title of Benois laureate.The award for “Best Female Dancer“ went to Ashley Bouder (Swanilda, Coppelia, New York City Ballet) and Elisa Carrillo Cabrera (Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, State Ballet Berlin). Vadim Muntagirov (Prince Siegfried, Swan Lake, Royal Ballet London) was named “Best Male Dancer”.
Scenographer John Macfarlane (Swan Lake, Royal Ballet London) was also awarded the Benois Prize.
This year the Lifetime Achievement Award” went to Jiří Kylián, an outstanding choreographer and two-time Benois de la Danse laureate. The Russian-Italian Benois-Massine Prize was awarded to the Prima-Ballerina of the Hamburg Ballet Anna Laudere and the Artistic Director of Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance Glenn Edgerton is set to receive the Benois-2017 statuette on behalf of highly acclaimed choreographer Crystal Pite.
The Jury of Benois-2019: Yuri Grigorovich, Dirk Badenhorst, Ted Brandsen, Svetlana Zakharova, Ana Laguna, Agnès Letestu, Vladimir Malakhov and Rachel Moore.
The second half of the evening was in no way less entertaining, as it included the gala concert of 2019 laureates, who performed the works of Juanjo Arques, Spetime Webre, Christian Spuck. Manuel Legris presented a duet from his version of Leo Delibes' “Sylvia” and Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman presented a miniature, that was created specially for the gala. Ashley Bauder from the NYC Ballet performed the wedding pas de deux from George Balanchine’s “Coppelia” with Seth Orza.Elisa Carrillo Cabrera and Ivan Zaytsev performed a duet from Nacho Duato’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Yuan Yuan Tan from the San Francisco Ballet and the Royal Swedish Ballet’s Kaho Yanagisawa along with their respective partners presented the choreography of Christopher Wheeldon and William Forsythe. Cuban dancer and choreographer from the Malpaso Dance Company Abel Rojo performed his miniature to the music of Erik Satie’s “Gnossienne”.Daniel Camargo and Elisa Badenes presented the immortal pas de deux from “Don Quixote” and the pas de deux from “La Sylphide” was performed by the premieres of the Washington Ballet Andile Ndlovuand Maki Onuki. Representing the Bolshoi Theatre was Viacheslav Lopatin, who danced a fragment from the ballet “NUREYEV” choreographed by Y.Posokhova, and Amadine Albisson participated in the gala on behalf of the Paris Opera Ballet.
A reception was held at the end of the concert to celebrate the Benois-2019 awards. Guests were offered champagne from the Abrau-Durso wine house and The Maison Mugler, who is a partner of the festival presented a new perfume collection, much to the guests’ delight.
