The Argentinian-German choreographer and opera director Demis Volpi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and began dancing at the age of four. In 1999 he joined the Escuela de Danza del Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. In 2000 he was accepted into Canada's National Ballet Schoolin Toronto. From 2002 to 2004 he attended the Academy of the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. He became an apprentice with the Stuttgart Balletand danced in the corps de ballet until 2013.
In 2006 Demis Volpi began to work as a choreographer, and his works for the Noverre Society's Young Choreographers became part of the Stuttgart Ballet's repertoire. His first work in the Stuttgart Ballet was ABig Blur (2010). He created The Carnival of the Animals for the John Cranko School in Stuttgart (2010), which was later restaged for the School of the Hamburg Ballet.
In the Stuttgart BalletVolpi premiered A Soldier's Tale, based on a score by Igor Stravinsky (2015). The choreographer created the role of The Devil for Alicia Amatriain, for which she received the German theater prize Der Faustand the Prix Benois de la Danse. In 2013 he created his first full length ballet Krabat for the Stuttgart Ballet and was appointed Resident Choreographer. In 2014 he staged his first opera, Fetonte by Niccolò Jommelli, in Schwetzingen, Germany.

Volpi has created over 30 pieces for companies around the world, including the American Ballet Theater, Ballet Augsburg, Badisches Staatsballett and Ballet de Santiago de Chile, as well as for ballet theaters inUruguay, Chicago, Gelsenkirchen, Latvia, Dortmund and Canada.

Volpi has collaborated with significant influential artists such as dancers Alicia Amatriain, Herman Cornejo, Alessandra Ferri, Sue Jin Kang, and Luis Ortigoza.
The choreographer was awarded with the internationally renowned Erik Bruhn Prizein 2011, the Chilean Cultural Critics' Award(2012) and Future, the prestigious German Dance Prize(2014).

In July 2016, he premiered Winter in Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. This project, a collaboration with three other choreographers for the John Cranko School, where Volpi is Artistic Director.
