Benois de la Danse nominee

Paul Lightfoot (born in Kingsley, England) studied at the Royal Ballet School in London. In 1985 he joined the ensemble of the Dutch Dance Theater (NDT-II).

Two years later, he became part of the main ensemble. There, he not only developed into one of the most prominent dancers of the ensemble, but also showed his talent for choreography in annual choreography workshops. He created his first production in 1988, the second followed just a few years later.

Paul Lightfoot (Kingsley, North England) and Sol Leon (Cordoba, Spain) met as dancers with NOT I in 1987. Both have danced in the many original works of such choreographers as Jirf Kylian, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin and Nacho Duato. Since the beginning of their collaboration in 1991 they have created some twenty ballets for the three companies of the Nederlands Dans Theater.

“The inventive, never predictable, extremely danceable and rich movement vocabulary combined with the fantasy-inducing compositional build-up wherein humor and gravity are effortlessly intertwined, elicits an enthusiastic reception from public and critics alike”. Award: Aanmoedigingsprijs voor Choreografie (Encouragement Prize for Choreography) from the Amsterdam Art Fund for Seconds (1992), Lucas Hoving Prize (1994), Choreografieprijs (Choreography Prize) 1997 from the Stichting Dansersfonds 79, Gouden Theaterdansprijs (Golden Theater-dance Prize), 2002 from the VSCD (for Paul Lightfoot).
