Toer van Schayk started his professional carrier in 1955 with The Netherlands Ballet that was later named The National Ballet of Netherlands.

He became a principal dancer in 1967 when Rudi van Dantzig headed the company. He created many roles in the Rudi van Dantzig's ballets, the most important among them — the main role in “Monument for a Dead Boy”.

In 1970 he made his first choreography. After finishing his dancing carrier in1976, he stayed with The National Ballet as a resident choreographer, creating around fifty ballets. Among them: “Before, at the time and after the jubilee“ by Bergeijk, “The Games“ by Debussi, „Dances Pyrric” by Lulli, Phillidor and Couperen, „Faune” by Debussi.

Toer van Schayk also studied sculpture and painting on a professional level and designed the decors and costumes for 80 productions of ballet, opera and drama, mainly in collaboration with Rudi van Dantzig.
