In 1986 Mr. Öhman won the Prix de l'AROP at the International Paris Competition. In the same year he was a finalist at the International Ballet Competition in Varna and won first prize in the Swedish Eurovision competition for young dancers.
Between 2002 and 2007 he directed Stockholm 59° North, a neoclassical-contemporary dance company consisting of soloists of the Royal Swedish Ballet.
In 2007 Mr. Öhman was appointed Artistic Director of the Göteborg Dance Company, formerly Gothenburg Ballet, the largest contemporary dance company in Scandinavia. In that position he commissioned works and collaborated with choreographers such as Sasha Waltz, Wim Vandekeybus, Mats Ek, Alexander Ekman, Stijn Celis, Johan Inger and others.
Since Mr. Öhman took over the artistic directorship of the Royal Swedish Ballet in 2011 he has developed the repertoire to include creations in classical ballet as well as contemporary dance. He commissioned Alexander Ekman's highly acclaimed A Midsummer Night's Dream and Mats Ek's internationally acclaimed new full-length production of Juliet and Romeo created for the Royal Swedish Ballet's 240th anniversary celebration.
Under Mr. Öhman’s tenure the Royal Swedish Ballet has enhanced its international standing and frequently performs at festivals around the world.
