Jury member of Benois de la Danse

Studied at the Moscow Ballet Academy (Piotr Pestov's class), and upon graduation in 1968 he joined the Bolshoi Ballet, where soon he was promoted to the soloist, and then became the Principal dancer.

On that famous stage he performed such parties as: Pan in Walpurgis Night from the opera Faust (choreography by L. Lavrovsky), Philip in The Flame of Paris (V. Vainonen), Basil in Don Quixote (A Gorsky), Prince Desire in The Sleeping Beauty (Y. Grigorovich, M. Petipa), Albert in Giselle (L. Lavrovsky, J. Perrot, J. Coralli, M. Petipa), a Poet in Les Sylphides (M. Fokin), Prince and Arlekin in Nutcracker, Ferkhad in Legend of Love, Spartacus, Sergei in Angara — all by Y. Grigorovich, Claudio in Love for Love, Icarus ( by V. Vasiliev), Prince in Wooden Prince, Solor in Shades (from La Bayadere by M. Petipa). In duet with N. Pavlova danced the leading roles of the classical repertory, and also in the ballets by Y. Grigorovich, O. Vinogradov, V. Vasiliev and other choreographers.

In 1972 V. Gordeev participated in National Ballet Competition and got the Second Prize. At the International Moscow Ballet Competition in 1973 he got the first prize and the Gold medal.

In 1981 he began his choreographic activity. In 1984 he founded and headed Moscow State Theatre “Russian Ballet”, where he stages about 30 ballets, such as Passacalia, The Meeting, Memory, The Steps, Revived Pictures, Surprise Maneuvers, or Wedding with a General. He is also the author of choreography reductions of Walpurgis Night, The Clocks Dance (from the Ponchielli's opera La Jioconda), such ballets as Don Quixote, Paquita, Swan Lake, Giselle, Coppelia, and ballets by A. Gorsky and M. Fokin.

People's artist of the Soviet Union, the laureate of Leninsky Komsomol Prize. He was on tour in many countries with the Bolshoi Ballet and with “Russian Ballet”. In 1995-1997 was the Artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet.
