Leonid Sarafanov was born in Kiev.

In 2000 he graduates from the Kiev Ballet academy and be╛comes the soloist of the Ballet of the Ukrainian National Opera where he performes the roles of James (La Sylphyde), Desire, Blue Bird (Sleeping Beauty), Sigfrid, Prince's Friend (Swan Lake), Prince (Nutcracker), Basil (Don Quixote), Escamilio (Karmen), Petrushka (Petrushka), Grand pas (Pakhita), Albert (Giselle).

He is a laureate of Nureev International Competition in Budapest — Second place, Silver medal (2000), Paris International Ballet Competition — First place and Golden medal (2000), Moscow International Ballet Competition — First place and Golden medal (2001).

Since 2002 he is the soloist of Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company. His repertory includes: James (La Sylphyde), Desire (Sleeping Beauty), Sigfrid (Swan Lake), Prince (Nutcracker, by Shemiakin), Basil (Don Quixote), AN (Le Corsaire), Solor (La Bayadere), Mercuzio (Romeo andJuliett), Pas de deux {Festival of Flowers in Genzano), Male role in The Vertignious Thrill of Exactitude by Forsythe.
