On June 8 and 9, in Moscow, on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Benois de la Danse International Ballet Festival will be held for the 28th time. Dear friends! Today, February 26, we invite you to watch the special edition “Living Legends” dedicated to the birthday of the outstanding choreographer John Neumeier.

The world premiere of one-act ballets “Neighbors” and «1418»

The world premiere of one-act ballets “Neighbors” and «1418» to music by Dmitry Shostakovich took place at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater. The performances were planned to be staged for the anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, but the premiere was postponed due to the pandemic.

Both ballets were created by the chief permanent choreographer, laureate of Benoit de la Danse Ivan Vasiliev. The plot is based on the events of the Great Patriotic War, which revive in the memory of its participants. The number 1418 symbolizes the number of those terrible days. Laureate of the Benois de la Danse Prize „For a Life Achievement” Natalia Makarova achieved a lot in life — as a dancer, choreographer and dramatic actress, she gave birth to a son, she got worldwide fame and ended her ballerina's career on the same stage on which she began — on the stage of the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theater. The program will be opened BY miniature “Spiral Twist“ to the music of M.Richter in choreography by Russel Malifant. It will be performed by the soloists of the Dortmund Ballet Lucia Lacarra, Benois de la Danse laureate, and Marlon Dino.

Soloist of the Mikhailovsky Theater, laureate of Benois de la Danse Ivan Vassiliev will present a work of his own composition “ Souvenirs” to the music of L. van Beethoven. His partner will be soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia Maria Vinogradova.

The laureates of the Prize Benois-Massine have been announced in Positano

The laureates of the Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine have been announced in Positano. This year, the ceremony was held online. The laureate of the Benois-Ma​ssine Prize ​became the English dancer and choreographer sir Anthony Dowell. Congratulations!

A​nthony Dowell was Director of the Royal ​Ballet ​London from 1986-2000, and in 2020 he w​as awarded the Benoi​s de a Danse Prize in the category ​“Lifetime Achievement”.

Prize Benois-Massine has been founded in 2015 and awarded by the organizers' committees of Premia Positano and Benois de la Danse. Among the laureates of Benois-Massine have been Ana Laguna, Alicia Amatriain, Mariko Kida, Eduard Watson, Ekaterina Krysanova, Maria Kochetkova and Vladislav Lantratov.

The Hamburg Ballet opened its 2020-2021 season with the premiere

On September 6, the Hamburg Ballet, one of the first in Europe, opened its 2020-2021 season with the premiere of John Neumeier's ballet Ghost Light. An exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Benois

In the House of Russian Diaspora named after Solzhenitsyn in Moscow opened an exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Benois. The exposition covers all aspects of Benois's work — a painter, art theorist, book illustrator and theater decorator. Our prize, the Benois de la Danse Prize, which was immediately compared with the “Ballet Oscar”, meaning the highest professional recognition was named after Alexander Benois, an outstanding persona of the world theatre.

The sculpture of the prize was ​created by Igor Ustinov, a descendant of Alexander Benois. In 2017, Igor Ustinov attended the 25th anniversary ceremony of the Benois de la Danse Prize.

If the ticket was purchased with cash mode of payment at the Bolshoi Theatre Box Office, it can be reimbursed from 14 June to 31 July 2020 by presenting tickets in person.

Manuel Legris has been appointed Artistic Director of La Scala Ballet

Manuel Legris, etoile of Paris Opera Ballet, Benois de la Danse member of the Jury and laureate, successful manager and choreographer, has been appointed Artistic Director of La Scala Ballet. He will take his new position next December, at the beginning of the new season.

Carlos Acosta has become Artistic Director of the Royal Birmingham Ballet

A famous Cuban dancer who for many years was a brightest star of the Royal Ballet London, Benois laureate Carlos Acosta has become Artistic Director of the Royal Birmingham Ballet. He started working on his new position in January 2020. Heartfelt congratulations!

Alexander Ekman is preparing the premiere

Alexander Ekman, Swedish choreographer and Benois nominee is preparing the premiere of ballet LIB with the State Ballet Berlin on December 8. The Benois laureates Polina Semionova, Elisa Carrillo Cabrera and Benois nominee Ksenia Ovsianik are in the cast.

Svetlana Zakharova in the program “Artificial Selection”

Svetlana Zakharova, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater and Milan's La Scala Theater, co-chairman of the Benois 2019 jury and twice Benois laureate in the program “Artificial Selection” by Grigory Zaslavsky.

Svetlana talks about working on the project MODANSE (Premiere Evening of Svetlana Zakharova), which will be held at the Bolshoi Theater on 26 and 27 November.

Spectators will see two one-act ballets: the premiere of the new edition of “AS BREATH” directed by Mauro Bigonzetti (diplomat BenoiS) and the world premiere of the ballet “GABRIELLE CHANEL” choreographed by Yuri Posokhov ( twice Benois laureate) to the music of the laureate BenoiS Ilya Demutsky.

Alexei Ratmansky will present a new version of ballet Giselle

Alexei Ratmansky (Benois laureate) will present a new version of ballet Giselle at the Bolshoi theatre on November 21-24. The choreographer turned to the original source — the 1860 notes of Henri Justaman and the later version of Marius Petipa. Set and costume designer – Robert Perdziola (Benois nominee).

World première

The full evening ballet Body and Soul to the music of Owen Belton.received it’s World première on October 25 at Palais Garnier. It is a new work for the Paris Opera Ballet by a Canadien choreographer Benois laureate Crystal Pite.

Ms. Pite announced before the premiere that she’s going to take a year long break from her job to think about some new projects.

The premiere of Dracula. The Beginning

The premiere of Dracula. The Beginning, show directed by Alexey Golubev, will be presented on November 3 at the State Kremlin Palace. Choreographer and lead actor is Ivan Vassiliev, premiere of Mikhailovsky Ballet and Benois laureate.

Dracula. The Beginning is a mixture of different genres — classical ballet and musical, theatre and cinema.

The Russian premiere of Don Quixote in Rudolf Nureyev

The Russian premiere of Don Quixote in Rudolf Nureyev's (member of the first Benois de la Danse Jury) version will be presented on October 25 at the Stanislavsky Musical Theatre in Moscow. This version has been staged by Laurent Hilaire, ex-etoile of Paris Opera, who was given this title by Nureyev and who's now the Artistic Director of Stanislavsky Ballet.

The world premiere of Don Quixote took place on December 14, 1869 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

​The premiere of Alexandre Gorsky's version was shown on December 6, 1900 also at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

The premiere of Rudolf Nureyev's version was presented on December 1, 1966 at the Vienna Opera House.

The premiere of a new version of La Bayadere

On October 4 at the Mikhailovsky Theatre of St. Petersburg will be presented the premiere of a new version of La Bayadere by Benois laureate Nacho Duato. It is the Spanish choreographer's first work after his returning to Mikhailovsky Ballet as its Artistic Director in 2019.

Premia Positano Leonid Massine and Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine

Premia Positano Leonid Massine and Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine will be awarded on September 7 in Positano, a town on the Amalfi coast of Italy.

The Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine will get a principal of the Royal Ballet London Vadim Muntagirov (one of Benois-2019 laureates).

Premia Positano Leonid Massin For Lifetime Achievement will go to a Spanish dancer and choreographer, artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet Nacho Duato (Benois laureate).

The premiere of one more version of Sergey Prokofiev

The premiere of one more version of Sergey Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet took place at the antic amphitheater Arena di Verona. The choreographer of the new reduction is Benois nominee Johan Kobborg. The title roles were danced by Sergey Polunin and Benois laureate Alina Cojocaru.

Evgenia Obraztsova was starring in Andrey Smirnov's film Frenchman

Prima-ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet Evgenia Obraztsova (Benois nominee) was starring in Andrey Smirnov's film Frenchman. A French student Pierre Durant comes to Moscow in 1957 for a practical training at Moscow University and meets a Bolshoi dancer Kira Galkina… The film is coming to the theatres on October 31.

Rudolf Nureyev's International Classical Ballet Festival will be open

On September 7 Rudolf Nureyev's International Classical Ballet Festival will be open in Oufa, the city where Nureyev (member of the first Benois de la Danse Jury) was born. In the program there are two ballets by Yuri Grigorovich Swan Lake and The Legend of Love. Also in the frame of the Festival will be shown three galas with the participation of Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters' stars; Gala-Tchaikovsky, Gala-Nureyev and Gala-Grigorovich. Ivan Vassiliev, the principal of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and Benois laureate, will take part in the program of Gala-Nureyev. All the Festival's events will be held on the stage of the Bashkortostan Opera and Ballet Theatre.

On July 29 by Yuri Grigorovich's Spartacus the Bolshoi Ballet opened its season in London on the stage of Covent Garden. In addition to Spartacus, the program announced Swan Lake, Don Quixote and The Bright Stream. Among the leading soloists are Benois laureates: Svetlana Zakharova, Olga Smirnova, Denis Rodkin and Semyon Chudin. The season will continue to August 17.

The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will open its season on the Historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre

On July 29 the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will open its season on the Historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The Novosibirsk's company under the reins of Denis Matvienko (Benois nominee) will present two ballets by Piotr Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake in Asaf Messerer version and The Sleeping Beauty in the version by Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and Benois laureate Nacho Duato. Another Benois laureate Ivan Vassiliev will dance the role of Evil Genius in Swan Lake on August 6, 7 and 8. The season will last until August 10.

On June 24 in Vladivostok took place the opening…

On June 24 in Vladivostok took place the opening night of the Fourth Far Eastern Festival Mariinsky with ballet by the house choreographer and Benois nominee Yuri Smekalov The Bronze Horseman. The role of the Tsarine of the Ball was danced by the Mariinsky Ballet prima-ballerina and Benois laureate Ekaterina Kondaurova.

The Bronze Horseman was created in 1949 by Rostislav Zakharov. The new choreographic version that was premiered in spring of 2016 has been made by Yuri Smekalov with the help of some retired dancers who used to dance in the original production.

Also in the frame of Festival will be shown, for the first time in Vladivostok, Sylvia by Leo Delibes and Frederick Ashton. The leading roles will be danced by the premiers of Mariinsky Ballet and Benois nominees Viktoria Tereshkina and Timur Ashkerov as well as by Benois laureate Kim Kimin and Nadejda Batoeva. There will be also in the Festival's program that runs until August 9 recitals of Kim Kimin and Vladimir Shkliarov.

The original version of Giselle

The original version of Giselle in choreography by a renown dance-maker Akram Khan (Benois nominee) was shown on the new stage of the Bolshoi theatre in the frame of the Chekhov Festival by the English National Ballet.

Leading roles were danced by Benois laureates Alina Cojocaru, Isaak Hernandes and Tamara Rojo (Artistic Director of the company who's idea was to commision this version to Akram Khan). The company principal James Stritter was Tamara Rojo's partner.

Akram Khan has been nominated to Benois de la Danse for Giselle in 2017.

Globally renowned choreographer, Benois de la Danse lauréate Mats Ek who announced a few years ago that he was going to completely retire from making choreographies and even staging his old works, presented on the stage of Palais Garnier the full evening of his creations Mats Ek. The new works include a duo Another Place to the music by Franz List and the famous Bolero by Maurice Ravel.

The Programme of the evening started with Carmen, ballet that choreographer created for his wife and muse Ana Laguna (Benois-Massine Prize laureate) 27 years ego.

THE 27th INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL BENOIS DE LA DANSE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

On May 21, the Bolshoi Theatre's Historic Stage saw the announcement of the 27th Benois de la Dansewinners

This year 6 choreographic works were nominated for the Prize and on the evening of May 21 the jury announced that the award for “Best Choreography” goes to Fredrik Benke Rydman (Duet with an Industrial Robot, Stockholm City Theatre) and Christian Spuck (Winterreise, Zurich Ballet)

Soloists of 11 leading dance troupes from around the world competed for the title of Benois laureate.The award for “Best Female Dancer“ went to Ashley Bouder (Swanilda, Coppelia, New York City Ballet) and Elisa Carrillo Cabrera (Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, State Ballet Berlin). Vadim Muntagirov (Prince Siegfried, Swan Lake, Royal Ballet London) was named “Best Male Dancer”.

Scenographer John Macfarlane (Swan Lake, Royal Ballet London) was also awarded the Benois Prize.

This year the „Lifetime Achievement Award” went to Jiří Kylián, an outstanding choreographer and two-time Benois de la Danse laureate. The Russian-Italian Benois-Massine Prize was awarded to the Prima-Ballerina of the Hamburg Ballet Anna Laudere and the Artistic Director of Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance Glenn Edgerton is set to receive the Benois-2017 statuette on behalf of highly acclaimed choreographer Crystal Pite.

The Jury of Benois-2019: Yuri Grigorovich, Dirk Badenhorst, Ted Brandsen, Svetlana Zakharova, Ana Laguna, Agnès Letestu, Vladimir Malakhov and Rachel Moore.

The second half of the evening was in no way less entertaining, as it included the gala concert of 2019 laureates, who performed the works of Juanjo Arques, Spetime Webre, Christian Spuck. Manuel Legris presented a duet from his version of Leo Delibes' “Sylvia” and Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman presented a miniature, that was created specially for the gala. Ashley Bauder from the NYC Ballet performed the wedding pas de deux from George Balanchine’s “Coppelia” with Seth Orza.Elisa Carrillo Cabrera and Ivan Zaytsev performed a duet from Nacho Duato’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Yuan Yuan Tan from the San Francisco Ballet and the Royal Swedish Ballet’s Kaho Yanagisawa along with their respective partners presented the choreography of Christopher Wheeldon and William Forsythe. Cuban dancer and choreographer from the Malpaso Dance Company Abel Rojo performed his miniature to the music of Erik Satie’s “Gnossienne”.Daniel Camargo and Elisa Badenes presented the immortal pas de deux from “Don Quixote” and the pas de deux from “La Sylphide” was performed by the premieres of the Washington Ballet Andile Ndlovuand Maki Onuki. Representing the Bolshoi Theatre was Viacheslav Lopatin, who danced a fragment from the ballet “NUREYEV” choreographed by Y.Posokhova, and Amadine Albisson participated in the gala on behalf of the Paris Opera Ballet.

A reception was held at the end of the concert to celebrate the Benois-2019 awards. Guests were offered champagne from the Abrau-Durso wine house and The Maison Mugler, who is a partner of the festival presented a new perfume collection, much to the guests’ delight.

THE 27TH INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL BENOIS DE LA DANSE. DEDICATED TO THE YEAR OF THEATRE

On May 21st and 22nd, the 27th International Ballet Festival Benois de la Danse, supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation will be celebrated on the historic stage of the Bolshoi Theatre.Those attending will be shown the world’s most spectacular dance works of the past year.Dancers from 18 of the world’s leading ballet companies and contemporary troupes will be taking part in the event.

A gala concert starring Benois-2019 nominees and the award ceremony will take place on May 21, whereas on May 22 dance lovers will be treated to “Benois de la Danse to the Year of Theatre”, a gala concert of ballet stars and Benois laureates of the previous years, as well as a performance by artists of the Vakhtangov Theatre, choreographed by Angelika Cholina.

During the press conference held in the Bolshoi Theatre on the 11th of April, organizers of the Festival spoke in great detail about the program of the gala-concert, as well as about the laureates that have already been announced. The Lifetime Achievement Prize, for example, has already been awarded to an outstanding choreographer, member of the French Academy des Beaux Arts and two-times Benois laureate Jiří Kylián,the Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine went to the Prima-Ballerina of the Hamburg Ballet Anna Laudere. She will be participating in both galas and together with Edvin Revazov will perform fragments from ballets by John Neumeier – “Beethoven Project” and the fourth movement “Adagietto” from “Fifth Symphony of Gustav Mahler”.

Choreographer Crystal Pite was awarded the Benois-2017 prize for her piece “The Seasons’ Canon” which she created for dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet.Being in high demand, and having her works shown all over the world, she will not be able to attend the festival, and Glenn Edgerton, the Artistic Director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will receive her award on her behalf. Michael Gross and Andrew Murdoch will perform a duet from Crystal Pite’s ballet “The Other You”. The gala also includes pieces by Juanjo Arqués, Septime Webre, and Christian Spuck.

Manuel Legris will present a duet from his version of Léo Delibes’ “Sylvia”. Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman, who is unable to perform his duet with a robot, because the latter weighs around one ton, is working on a piece specifically for the gala.

The Bolshoi Theatre will be represented by Vyacheslav Lopatin, The Paris Opera Ballet – by Amandine Albisson and Audric Bezard performing the last pas de deux from John Neumeier’s “Lady of the Camellias”.

Leading dancers of the Dutch National Ballet Maia Makhateli and Constantine Allen will perform the pas de deux of the first act. Ashley Bouder and Seth Orzaof the NYC Ballet will present the wedding pas de deux from George Balanchine’s “Coppelia”.

Eliza Carrillo Cabrera and Ivan Zaytsev will appear in a duet from “Romeo and Juliette” by Nacho Duato.

Yuan Yuan Tan of the San Francisco Ballet and the Swedish Royal Ballet’s Kaho Yanagisawa and their respective partners will present the choreography by Christopher Wheeldon and William Forsythe.

Cuban choreographer and dancer Abel Rojowill perform his miniature to the music of Erik Satie’s “Gnossienne”. Daniel Camargo and Elisa Badenes will perform the classic pas de deux from Don Quixote.

Maki Onuki and Andile Ndlovu, lead dancers of the Washington Ballet will present the pas de deux from “La Sylphide”.

The gala concert on the 22nd of May will be dedicated to the Year of Theatre and the ballet dancers will be joined by artists of the Vakhtangov Theatre who will be performing scenesfrom “Othello”, “Queen of Spades” and “Anna Karenina”, choreographed by Angelika Cholina. Another one of her works, Duet of Nastassia Philippovna and Rogogin, will be danced by Benois laureate and Prima-Ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre Olga Smirnova with Denis Savin.

Benois-Massine laureate Maria Kochetkova is set to perform the rather contemporary “Degunino” and Daniel Camargo is responsible for presenting the “Firebreather” miniature.

The audience will also be treated to a rather striking combination of twointertwining Orpheus-Eurydice duets, both choreographed by John Neumeier but during different periods of time, featuring Silvia Azzoni, Alexander Riabko and lead dancers of the Joffrey Ballet Victoria Jaiani and Temur Suluashvili.

Constanine Allen is choreographing a duet to the music of Rachmaninoff starring himself and Maia Makhateli. Christian Spuck is also creating a special piece for the occasion, which will be brought to life by principal dancers of Ballett Zürich Elena Vostrotina and Cohen Aitchison-Dugas. And Elisa Carrillo Cabrera and Mikhail Kaniskin will perform Uwe Scholz’scharming miniature “Creation”.

Four Old Legs had its premiere in Toronto

Four Old Legs, ballet made by Benois nominee James Kudelka for one of the best Canadian Ballerina Eveline Hart had its premiere in Toronto.

Kudelka was going to be himself the partner of 63-year old ballerina, but after few first rehearsals decided that Evgueny Cherniakov will dance instead.

The Moscow premiere of Christopher Wheeldon

On April 4 at the Historic Bolshoi Theatre took place the Moscow premiere of Christopher Wheeldon's The Winter's Tale. Wheeldon, together with the composer Joby Talbot, are the authors of libretto based on the Shakespeare's play. They both had Benois de la Danse for this ballet.

Vladislav Lantratov who was in the first cast for the role of Florizel, got injured during the second act. The performance was stopped, and after a pause David Motta Soares came on stage instead of Lantratov and saved the spectacle.

The Benois de la Danse team joins all ballet goers to wish Vladislav a speedy and easy recovery!

Ballet of the Perm Opera presented…

Ballet of the Perm Opera presented two one-act ballets — Scheherazade and Fire-bird — in choreography by the Artistic Director of the company and Benois nominee Alexey Miroshnichenko.

The leading roles in Scheherazade were danced by the prima-ballerina of Mariinsky Theatre Diana Vishneva and a famous American dancer Marcelo Gomes (both Benois laureates).

Nureyev, ballet was awarded as well premia BraVo

Nureyev, ballet that got 4 Benois de la Danse in 2018 to: Composer Ilya Demutsky, Choreographer Yuri Possokhov, Dancer for the role of Nureyev Vladislav Lantratov and Scenographer Kirill Serebriannikov was awarded as well premia BraVo. Award was presented be Hellen Mirren, the British actress by Russian decent, and accepted by Vladislav Lantratov, who, in reply, mentioned all the creators of ballet and thanked the General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, Vladimir Urin.

Benois laureates, choreographer Yuri Possokhov and composer Ilya Demutsky, co-authors of ballet Nureyev that took almost all last year's Benois, presented a new full evening spectacle Anna Karenina. It is a co-production of Joffrey Ballet and The Australian Ballet. Premiere took place on February 13 in Chicago with Chicago Symphony and dancers of Joffrey Ballet. The leading roles were performed by Victoria Jaiani, Alberto Velazquez and Fabrice Kalmels.

Jiri Kylian has been elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts

Jiri Kylian, dancer, and choreographer of Czech descent, twice Benois laureate, creator of the whole stream in contemporary choreography has been elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts that is a part of The French Institut. The ceremony will be held on March 13. With Kylian's election has been created the Section of Choreography as a part of Academie des Beaux-Arts.

Brooklyn Mack will join American Ballet Theatre

Brooklyn Mack, a former member of The Washington Ballet, ABT Studio Company and Benois nominee, will join American Ballet Theatre as Guest Artist during the Company’s 2019 Spring season at the Metropolitan Opera House. It was announced today by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie. Mack will dance the role of Ali in Le Corsaire at the matinee on Wednesday, June 12 and the role of Conrad on the evenings of Thursday, June 13 and Saturday, June 15.

Nureyev's ballet has been named The Best Musical Performance

Nureyev, Yury Possokhov and Kirill Serebrennikov's ballet created for the Bolshoi Theater of Russia has been named The Best Musical Performance by the vote of the Audience Award Star of a Theatre Goer. The music of this ballet was written by Ilya Demutsky.

In 2018 Yury Possokhov, Ilya Demutsky, Kirill Serebrennikov and Vladislav Lantratov (for the role of protagonist) received Benois de la Danse for this ballet.

On November 25 at the New Tretyakov Gallery will take place the premiere of For the Black Square, opera by Benois laureate Ilya Demutsky. Kazimir Malevitch's famous painting will be specially installed at the audience.

The double bill composed of Artifact-suite by Benois laureate William Forsythe and Petrushka by Edward Klug (Benois nominee) was presented on the New stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. Benois laureate Vladislav Lantratov and Ekaterina Krysanova (Benois-Massine Prize laureate) are in the cast.
