2018 – Year of Ballet, dedicated to 200 Anniversary of the great choreographer, Marius Petipa.

5 June – the ceremony of presenting Benois de la Dance Prize and the gala of this year nominees will also include participation of State Ballet Berlin prima-ballerina PolinaSemionova, the winner of Benois-2014, and San Francisco Ballet prima-ballerina Maria Kochetkova, the laureate of the Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine.

The Lifetime Achievement Prizewas awarded by the Jury-2018 to Natalia Makarova. She will receive it in person as well as Sylvie Guillem, who will get herLifetime Achievement Prize awarded to her in 2015.

Boris Eifman Ballet Theater based in St. Petersburg has celebrated its 40th Jubilee on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater by a gala performance “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”. The dancers of all these decades participated in the celebration as well as students of the Dance Academy. The Founder and Artistic Director of the company, member of Benois Jury and its laureate, choreographer Boris Eifman, noted that despite the common sense of the Gala's title, it completely reflects the idea — to show the present of the company, to honor dancers who helped to create its success from the beginning, to take a look at the future.

Elisabetta Terabust passed away on February 5 in Rome

Elisabetta Terabust, one of the brightest stars of the Italian ballet, prima-ballerina of the Rome Opera Ballet and member of Benois de la Danse Jury, passed away on February 5 in Rome. She was a muse of Roland Petit in his company in Marseille, a partner of Erik Bruhn, Rudolph Nureyev, Fernando Bujones and other great artists. After leaving stage, she had been Artistic Director of the Rome Opera Ballet, Ballet of La Scala, Ballet of Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

Trained in the British school, in the seven years he has worked at the Mariinsky Theatre under the guidance of legendary St Petersburg coaches, Xander Parish has assimmilated the style of the Petersburg school of classical dance. The collection of 40 photographic images of Russian ballet stars including Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya and also our winners —Svetlana Zakharova, Ulyana Lopatkina and Diana Vishneva. The pictures capture the mesmerizing moments during their rehearsals and triumphal performances on stage. Also on display are the portraits of renowned choreographers:Yury Grigorovich as well as Benois laureates Boris Eifman and Alexey Ratmansky. The jubilee gala on May 30 will be opened by Joseph Walsh, the premier of the San Francisco Ballet, and Victoria Jaiani from the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, who last year performed the duet from Lan Lubovitch’s Otello alongside Fabrice Calmel. Victoria and Joseph will animate the sculpture of Benois de la Danse: they will present a miniature choreographed by Yuri Possokhov to the music by Ilya Demutsky, who have conceived this duet as a gift to the jubilee of Benois. The idea to “breathe life” into the prize’s symbol belongs to its author — Igor Ustinov.

During the press conference that was held in the Bolshoi Theatre on April 11, the organizers have explained in detail the program for the upcoming gala concerts, as well as providing some insight into the award ceremony.

Benois-2017 Prize For Lifetime Achievement has been awarded to an outstanding ballerina-actress Marcia Haydee and the Russin-Italian Prize Miroir de la Danse — to the Benois laureate, Etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, Aurelie Dupont.

The ceremony will start with the defile of all Benois laureates and Jury members who will gather this day in Moscow.

The audience will also be treated to fragments from pieces signed by stars of contemporary choreography, including Edward Klug’s latest work, which was premiered recently in Dortmund, and two duets from legends — Salome and John the Baptist by DemisVolpi,as well as Dido and Aeneas, which is accompanied by Dido’s aria from the Opera by H. Purcell and choreographed by SidiLarbiCherkaoui. In addition, Joseph Walsh and Lauren Strongin will perform the duet from Scarlatti’s Seven Sonatas by Alexey Ratmansky.

The gala concert on May 31 will feature a retrospective of Benois' stone miles in its 25-year history. Mats Ekand Ana Laguna will tell us about the life of a married couple in a miniature titledMemory. Two other prize laureates will present their pieces, made especially for the jubilee: Ivan Vasiliev is preparing a duet to the music by L.van Beethoven which he will perform with Maria Vinogradova; Yana Salenko and Marian Walter from Berlin will take on a new piece choreographed by Nacho Duato. They will also present a fragment from Roland Petit’sBat. Marie-AgnèsGillotand Hugo Marchand will perform a duet from Carolin Carlson’sSigns — a ballet that both ladies wonBenois prize. Tamara Rojo along with Isaac Hernandez will present a miniature choreographed by Hans van Manen, and 4 premiers dancers of San-Francisco Ballet will performVariations for two couples, the Benoiswined piece by him.Maurice Béjart’s choreography will be danced by the familiar AlessioCabone from the Paris Opera, and William Forsythe’s last work for the Paris Opera Ballet Blake Work troupe will be recreated by LeonoreBaulac and Francois Alu. A gala dedicated to the famous Diagilev's Russian Seasons took place at Coliseo Theatre in London featuring the soloists from the leading ballet companies. Festival dedicated to the 90th Jubilee of choreographer Yuri Grigorovich that was running at the Bolshoi Theatre since his birthday on January 2, and showed 11 ballet by Maestro was concluded by few performances of Ivan The Terrible. The protagonists were danced by Benois laureates Svetlana Zakharova, Olga Smirnova, Ivan Vassiliev and also by Mikhail Lobukhin, Viacheslav Lantratov, Denis Rodkin (all Benois nominees).

The French premiere of Tree of Codes, a ballet that Wayne McGregor (Benois laureate) has shown for a first time in Summer of 2015 at New Yorker Park Avenue Armory, recently took place at Palais Garnier. In this production dancers of Studio McGregor based in London, perform together with a Paris Opera Etoiles Marie-Agnes Gillot (Benois laureate).

New one-act ballet Love is All Around (choreography by Ivan Vasiliev, benois de la danse laureate) is set in psychiatric hospital. Two people, surrounded by over zealous nurses and doctors, fall in love with each other. On February 14, 15 will be the premiere in Mikhailovsky theatre.

The Royal Ballet of Flanders on January 27 has launched the premiere of Spartakus in choreography by Yuri Grigorovich (the Head of Benois de la Danse Program) to the music by Aram Khachaturian.
All 7 performances (to February 5) at the audience of 2000 people, have been sold out,- said Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Artistic Director of the company and Benois laureate for his piece Babel.

Laurent Hilaire, ex-etoile of Paris Opera Ballet, member of the Benois Jury and its laureate who on last January 1 became Artistic Director of Stanislavsky Ballet in Moscow, has announced the first premiere of the 2016-2017 season. It will be a triple bill: Suite en Blanc by Serge Lifar, The Second Detail by William Forsythe (Benois laureate) and Petite Morte by Jiri Kylian (Benois laureate). Petite Morte, unlike two other pieces, was before in repertoire of the Stanislavsky Ballet; Suite en Blanc will be presented on a Russian stage for a first time. Premiere has been planned for July 2017.

Ivan Vassiliev, international super-star and Benois laureate, celebrated his 10 years on stage at the Mikhailovsky Theatre of St.Petersburg. His friends and colleagues, Nina Kaptsova, Denis Rodkin, Leonid Sarafanov, Denis Matvienko (Benois laureates and nominees), took part in the jubilee program that included excerpts from grand classics like Le Corsaire, Don Quichotte and Talisman as well as from ballets of contemporary choreographers like Yuri Grigorovich, Benois laureates Nacho Duato and Lar Lubovitch. David Hallberg will take part in the company

David Hallberg, star of the American Ballet Theatre and Benois laureate is returning to stage after two and half years off due to a foot injury. This was announced by the Artistic Director of the company, Kevin McKenzie (member of the Benois Jury). Hallberg will take part in the company's spring season at the Metropoliten-Opera House. In the frame of Lincoln Center Festival in New York in July will be celebrated the 50 Anniversary of George Balanchine's Jewlers with the participation of three major companies-Bolshoi Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and New York City Ballet. Parisian dancers will dance every time the first part of ballet Emeralds and Russians will alternate with Americans in Rubies and Diamonds. David Hallberg returned after two and half years of treatment

David Hallberg, the star of the American Ballet Theatre, premier of the Bolshoi Theater and Benois de la Danse laureate returned to stage on Decembef 16 after two and half years of treatment of an injury. He returned as Franz in Coppelia on the stage of the famous Sydney Opera house with the troupe of the Australian Ballet with the warmest welcome of the audience and support of the company. Premiere of The Stone Flower

On December 6 at the Mariinsky Theatre was presented premiere of The Stone Flower, a ballet by Sergey Prokofiev in Yuri Grigorovich (President of Benois de la Danse Jury) choreography. This version was first staged at the Mariinsky (then Kirov Ballet) in 1957. It was the last work by Sergey Prokofiev who died in 1953, and the debut of young Grigorovich. 2018 may be declared Year of the Russian Ballet and Marius Petipa. It was announced by Olga Golodets (the vice-premier of the Russian Government) and Director of the Vaganova Academy, Nicolay Tsiscaridze (Benois laureate). The idea was initiated by the committee that is organizing the celebration of 200 years jubilee of the genius choreographer and was supported by Vladimir Putin.

Laurent Hilaire becomes Artistic Director of Stanislavsky Ballet in Moscow

Laurent Hilaire,a famous Etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, member of Jury and twice Benois de la Danse laureate, on January 1, 2017 becomes Artistic Director of Stanislavsky Ballet in Moscow. Andrey Uvarov (Benois laureate) is going to take a position of administrative director of the company.

Mr. Hilaire is going to move to Moscow, a city he knows quite well having come here with Paris Opera Ballet as a dancer, and few times by Benois de la Danse invitations.

On October 29 and 30 in St. Petersburg, Russia, at the main auditorium of the Tovstonogov's Theater will be shown the premiere of The Sleeping Beauty in the version of a Paris Opera ex-etoile and Benois laureate, Jean- Guillaume Bart.

This is a first cooperation of Leonid Jacobson Ballet Company with French choreographer.

For Mr. Bart it is his second ballet made for a Russian company,- in 2007 he staged Le Corsaire for Ekaterinburg Ballet.

The Sleeping Beauty at the Novosibirsk Opera House

Nacho Duato, a Spanish choreographer and Benois de la Danse laureate, who's now director of State Ballet Berlin, staged in Novosibirsk Opera House his version of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty. This is the third staging of Duato's version, the first two were shown in St. Petersburg and Berlin. In an interview choreographe said that he wanted to do something of his own but on classical base, eg “tutus, points and pirouettes”.

For the first time Sleeping Beauty was staged in Novosibirsk in 1953 in the classical Marius Petipa's version. In 1996 Sergey Vikharev presented his version of ballet that had been in the repertoire of the company more than 15 years.

Andrey Uvarov has been appointed Director interim of the company

Andrey Uvarov, one of the first Benois laureates, former star of the Bolshoi Ballet and a maitre de ballet de Moscow Musical Stanislavsky Theatre, has been appointed Director interim of the company following the resignation of Igor Zelensky who became Artistic Director of the Bavarian State Ballet. However, Mr. Zelensky is keeping his relationship with Moscow company as an Advisor on dance programming to the General Director of the Theatre, Anton Getman.

Mauro Bigonzetti abruptly resigns from position…

The Teatro alla Scala press release announced that Mauro Bigonzetti, the Italian choreographer and Benois de la Danse nominee, who has been Director of La Scala Ballet since past March, abruptly resigns from this position do to some serious health issue. The premiere of Coppelia planned to be on December 20 won't be cancelled or rescheduled but will be choreographed by a different choreographer whose name will become public the next week.

Frederic Olivieri (Benois Jury member), former Director of the company who is now Director of La Scala Ballet School, will replace Mr. Bigonzetti as Director Interim until February 2017.

The Ballet Theater Yuri Grigorovich in Krasnodar celebrates its 20th Jubilee. The gala-evening has been programed for October 15 featuring three suites from Grigorovich's ballets: Romeo and Juliet by S. Prokofiev, Nutcracker by P. Tchaikovsky and Spartacus by A Khachaturian.

Whipped Crem, a World Premiere by American Ballet Theatre, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky (twice Benois de la Danse) and designed by artist Mark Ryden, set for March 15, 2017 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California. Two-act ballet with original libretto and score by Richard Strauss.

New York Premiere scheduled for May 22, 2017 at the Metropolitan Opera House.

On September 10 in an Italian town of Positano, on Amalfi coast, had been held the award ceremony and the gala of Positano Premia Danza Leonid Massine and of the twined Prize Benois-Moscow Massine-Positano. The awardee of Benois-Massine Prize has become Benois de la Danse — 2016 laureate, star of the Stuttgart State Ballet, ALICIA AMATRIAIN.

AURELIE DUPONT, etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet and Benois de la Danse laureate, who on August 1 officially replaced Benjamin Millepied (Benois nominee) as Directrice de la Danse of the old house, got the Positano Prize For Carriere. Members of Benois Jury, Helene Trailine and Victor Ulliate, were awarded Prizes Massine Heritage and Excellence in Ballet Education, respectively.
