Vladislav Lantratov about the Russian-Italian International Ballet Prix Benois-Massine Moscow-Positano

Vladislav Lantratov, principal dancer at Russia’s Bolshoi Theater, Benois laureate, was awarded the Russian-Italian International Ballet Prix Benois-Massine. The awards ceremony took place in Positano, in the south of Italy. The laureate’sfirstimpressions:

Vladislav Lantratov:
For me, the Russian-Italian Prix Benois-Massine a new starting point in my career, in my artistic life. It is wonderful and a great honor. I’m very happy that I was given this award, grateful to fate and to the people who voted for me. But I think I will appreciate the significance of it over time, over the years.

There is a strange storyconnected with the award. It was given to me for the role of Rudolph Nureyev in the ballet of the same name at the Bolshoi Theater, a ballet that resonated with the public even before it was performed. I  didn’t go after the role — I didn’t feel an affinity for it. To the contrary, this was a case when the artist was called to the role. The creators Yuri Possokhov and Kirill Serebrennikov didn’t just choose me — they persuaded me and saw me in the role. One must not dismiss this kind of attention. It’s rare for a choreographer to connect his ideas specifically with you. That decided it. I began to rehearse and the ballet was performed. First it brought me the Prix Benois de la Danse and now – the Prix Positano.

When we came to this heavenly place, which is connected with many Russian ballet dancers and the dancer I play, I talked with a woman who spends a lot of time here. She told me that she saw Rudolph Nureyev here many times. When she was younger she’d loved him as a dancer and was terribly eager to “see him” again, this time as a character in a ballet. It seems that many lifelines and eventshave crossed paths here.

All of the last season was incredibly eventful: I was awarded the title of Merited Artist of the Russian Federation and two international prizes. And then there was the premiere of “Nureyev” at the Bolshoi, “Don Quixote” at the Mariinsky Theater, “Giselle” at the San Carlo Theater in Naples, as well as performances at galas in London, Tokyo and elsewhere.

And I met so many helpful people. For example, for the Mariinsky production of “Don Quixote” we had to learn several new episodes. Two St. Petersburg teachers, Tatiana Terekhova and Igor Petrov, worked with Maria Alexandrova and me. Then the entire troupe got so involved and was so kind — as if they picked up on our emotions and carried on in the same spirit. We gave an inspired performance, which was greeted ecstatically by the public. We have the best memories of that ballet.

In the San Carlo Theater there were also a few episodes in the first act that had to be rehearsed again to make them work on that particular stage. My partner was Marianela Núñez. The Italian public is, as you know, very emotional — both for and against. And they can’t hide either one. Our two performances were really well received. That’s what we work for, why we go on stage. And when you are given more than applause — when you’re given awards, too, well, that’s not life, it’s simply “felicita.”

The ceremony for the Prix Positano itself is nothing like the ceremony for the BenoisdelaDanseat our Bolshoi Theater. It’s very intimate, almost like a family affair. Everyone knows everyone else; the public takes their places on the beach or watch the event as they sit at tables in restaurants and cafes. But everyone seems to understand the meaning of this event, its historical essence – carrying forward the thread from the past — from Leonid Massine, the Diaghilev ballets and Rudolph Nureyev — to the present day.

The Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine 2018 will be awarded Vladislav Lantratov

The Russian-Italian Prize Benois-Massine 2018 will be awarded to the premier of the Bolshoi Ballet, Benois laureate Vladislav Lantratov. «I am very sorry to inform that I will have to stop my career as a dancer because of a re-occuring knee injury. Of course I am sad and I will miss dancing very much but I have had an amazing dancing career and I look back on it with lots of joy and pride! Also I am very happy to announce that I will be staying with Dutch National Ballet as assistant balletmaster. It will be wonderful to give on my love and knowledge to the generations to come!

I will be dancing one last time on the 16th of september at the Nationale Opera en Ballet in Amsterdam. In light of the triple bill `The New Classics’ I will dance the white pas de deux from Lady of the Camellias (John Neumeier) with dear partner Igone de Jongh and will finish with Edward Clug’s ‘Sss…». Marijn Rademaker
